Thousands of Acres Lake of the Woods offers literally thousands of acres of public hunting opportunities in addition to the waters of the Rainy River, Big Traverse Bay and NW Angle. Most hunting opportunities begin in September. Grouse There are three species of grouse that inhabit this area. The most common is the Ruffed Grouse. Spruce grouse and sharp tailed grouse are also prevalent. Some hunters will shoot all three species in one trip. Many of our resorts and hotels are dog friendly, so bring along your dog when you visit. Waterfowl With all of the water, Lake of the Woods in itself attracts a large variety and number of waterfowl. Canada geese, mallards, teal, wood ducks, shovelers, bluebills, buffleheads, redheads, canvasbacks, are just a start. Lots of hunting opportunities exist. Field hunting, jump shooting, hunting over decoys, river, sloughs, big water, islands, and more. Just like the Ashing, bring your own equipment or use our resorts and guides to get you on birds.
